Gerard Pique speaks about controversial images taken with Neymar

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has insisted that the controversial photographs with former teammate Neymar are not directed towards the club’s recent actions.

Neymar, 25, sealed his move to Paris Saint-Germain from Camp Nou earlier this month for a world-record fee of £198m.

The likes of Pique, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez had posted pictures with the Brazil international via Instagram on Wednesday – the same period when the Catalan giants sued Neymar for a breach of contract. Speaking from the Pokerstars event at a casino in Barcelona, Pique clarified that the club’s players are not restricted from catching up with Neymar, who remains a close friend following his four-year stint in Catalunya, he said:

“These are things that happen. Coincidences. The club are going to court with Neymar, but we were at a party [with him] and no one had communicated anything to us. They were normal photos. Neymar is a former teammate but he’s also a friend. If we want to send messages to the board, we will do it in private and we will sit down with the club. We don’t need to use social media. It’s all been taken out of context. We’re not angry with the club nor is there a lack of communication.”

Barcelona had a tough spell under former boss Luis Enrique last term as they failed to offer a strong challenge for the Champions League title. Despite this, Pique believes can get back to their old self amid the club’s search for signings prior to the deadline.

Pique refused to comment on the ongoing speculation linking both Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele to the club but acknowledged that the hierarchy know what they are capable of doing in the Barcelona shirt. Finishing his speech, the former Manchester United ace took a dig at Real Madrid suggesting that they will start losing games at a particular stage.
