BARCA SET TO NAME NEW COACH

Barcelona are set to name a new coach on Monday. Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde is expected to be the new manager of the Catalan outfit.

The speculations entered another gear when the Basque club confirmed that Valverde would not remain with them next season.

The president of the club Josep Maria Bartomeu said the club would announce a name after the board makes a decision on Monday. The club considers former club stars who have a track record in management.

Fifty-three year Valverde is a former star of the club and he has been decent with Athletic. He supervised their eighth place finish in the La Liga this season. The players seem to be happy with the choice after reports filtered in that the players know who is coming in.

Valverde previously managed Espanyol and seems to fit the profile for the role. Whilst leaving Bilbao, the coach said he did not have any commitment to any team. He admitted that there were some teams that were interested in him but did not call names.

“Athletic is my club, first I say goodbye to them and then I’ll think of another team. I will not talk about other teams here and now,” he said.

Luis Enrique was successful in his spell in charge going by the stats but he was rarely appreciated for his work. He did the treble in his first year when Luis Suarez arrived in 2014 to partner Lionel Messi and Neymar. They retained the league last season and only narrowly lost it to Real Madrid this term.
