Diego Simeone believes that his team were extremely good
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes that his team were extremely good in the recent game over Sevilla and it was not a surprise to see them grab a 3-0 win.
After only managing a narrow 1-0 win over Las Palmas in the opening game of the campaign, there was a real need of statement from the former league champions. Their title defence did not materialise last season and Diego Simeone is someone that his team needs to perform consistently in order to be considered as real title contenders. A good start to the season was also essential since the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid are virtual certainties to do the same.
Jackson Martinez, Gabi and Koke scored a win over Sevilla and it sees Atletico remain as one of the four clubs in the league with a 100% start to the season. Barcelona, who are now marshalled by the quite impressive Gerard Pique, are one among those clubs and it will take a lot of quality from Atletico in order to beat the Catalan club to the league title. Unlike in the last few seasons, Simeone needs a title or two in this campaign if he is to prove as a top-level manager. His past success was achieved without major budget, but the club has spent more than € 100 million this summer.
“From the result, it would seem simple. We were facing a rival that has one of the best teams. It can attack on the wings or in the midfield. It defends well. But the team’s best thing was the high pressure. [Antoine] Griezmann and [Fernando] Torres played a tremendous match in that pressure. We are improving little by little. The other day [against Las Palmas] it was harder for us. Today, there were a few moments of the match where the team did not have control of the game,” said Simeone.
