Pique Supports Two-Week Break
Barcelona manager Luis Enrique decided to give striker Neymar rest after his recent Olympic exertions. Neymar was the face of the Brazilian national team that was chasing Olympic gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics. This was the only medal missing from the Brazilian national team cabinet.
It was especially important given the recent poor performances by the national team at major tournaments like the World Cup and Copa America. Even though this was a tournament for the under 23 team, Neymar was picked as part of the three overage players. Barcelona went along with the wishes of the player so as to give him a great opportunity to win Olympic gold.
The Brazil superstar came up with an impressive performance that helped the nation achieve this dream. Following the conclusion of the tournament, it has been decided that Neymar will spend the next two weeks into recuperation. Luis Enrique has allowed Neymar to return to the Barcelona squad only after the conclusion of the two-week international break that starts this weekend.
Gerard Pique admitted that this was especially important for the striker after his performances at the Olympics. Since Neymar has been one of the players to be involved in non-stop action over the last couple of years, it could take a toll on his body if he is not given proper rest.
“It’s not been easy [for Neymar] because to be there [Brazil] meant there was a lot of pressure to win, even though he’s accustomed to that. So he’s earned this break because it was a long, tough competition and [next week] he has more games with the national team. It’s a good decision,” said Gerard Pique. Due to the constant action at club and international level, Neymar has been averaging around 55 games per season in the last three years.
