The Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has said that the team should be not complacent after opening a six-point advantage over the second placed team – Athletico Madrid – in the table. Unusually this season, Athletico Madrid have become the main competitors for Barcelona for the league title.
This is due to the unusual collapse of the archrivals Real Madrid, who are a massive 11 points behind him in the table. However, the recent 2-0 win for Real Madrid in the Madrid derby has meant that Barcelona now enjoy a six-point advantage over Athletico Madrid. This has led to many believing that the title race is almost done and dusted.
However, the Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has said that complacency should not set into the players under any circumstance. The defender opened the scoring for the club in the recent 5-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao. Even though Barcelona created a number of opportunities in the match, they were unable to find the opening goal. Gerard Pique then poked in from close range after the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper have done well to keep out a shot from a Barcelona player. As a result of this victory, Barcelona now have created a record of having made the best possible start to a la Liga season in their history.
“This good start gives us plenty of peace of mind ahead of what we still have to come. We are in a great position, and if we can carry on like this, we have a lot to win. There is a lot of season left and we are experienced enough to know that we have to keep our feet on the ground. In Guardiola’s first year we had a similar lead, but ended up having to go to the Bernabeu to win the league,” said Gerard Pique.
